ICQ brought instant messaging to the masses, but it's been AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) client that has taken the concept to the forefront of the Internet software scene. Similar to e-mail, instant messaging allows you to exchange free, private messages with your online friends. But unlike e-mail, instant messages appear as soon as they're sent.
