One area where Google Groups really sets itself apart from the competition is its news search features. In addition to powerful search capabilities for finding newsgroups and specific information in news articles, you can also search for articles by subject or by author. Additional options allow you to limit Google news searches to a set of dates or a subset of the Deja archive. Results can then be sorted by a relevance score, newsgroup, author, subject thread, or date.
Additional features in Google Groups include free access to more than 50,000 newsgroups (especially useful if your ISP has a limited or nonexistent supply of newsgroups), automatic SPAM filtering, a simplified and intuitive web-based interface, and the ability to access the newsreader from anywhere (although you won't have access to all of your settings without your default web browser's Google Groups cookie).
