Internet Explorer 4.0

The 4.0 release of Internet Explorer shows that Microsoft is no longer content for its browser to just match Netscape feature for feature -- it wants to render the current champ obsolete. While the gap between the two browsers has narrowed considerably over the last year, Netscape has continued to retain a slight edge over the contender, an edge that could very well evaporate entirely as IE 4.0 saturates the marketplace.

IE 4.0 has of course been bundled with Windows 98 and represents many of the most noticeable changes in the new OS; additionally, the newest release of The Microsoft Network (v2.5) includes IE 4.0 and many of the nation's largest internet providers have already signed on to support the new browser. With IE 4.0 (and IE 5.0 in Windows 2000) to be found on every Windows 98/NT desktop as well as everywhere else you turn, don't be surprised to see Netscape's market share continue to take a beating over the next few months.
