Outlook Express vs. Microsoft Outlook
When you combine the Rules Wizard with the new Junk Mail (SPAM) filtering system and the ability to block specific sends, Outlook Express' mail filtering system is the most advanced of its kind. The only major Internet mail feature given up by Outlook Express is Outlook's ability to create and send Fax messages via a downloadable plug-in.
Outlook Express does lack some of the features found in the commercial Outlook client, most notably the Personal Information Manager (PIM) and scheduler clients. It also lacks the new Outlook Today feature, which presents a snapshot view of the current day's events and offers a concise listing of your appointments, daily tasks, and e-mail messages. The new starting page in v5.x performs a somewhat similar role but is not nearly as useful as Outlook Today.
Outlook also offers a built-in Journal that tracks Office documents and e-mail messages and an electronic notes feature (the electronic version of those little yellow sticky notes). But Outlook Express does retain nearly all of Outlook's e-mail features and enjoys performance benefits that result from not being bulked down by all of Outlook's additional components.
