Shockwave Plug-in
Macromedia's Shockwave Player
Forrest Stroud

Macromedia's plug-in Shockwave technology bridges the gap between standalone Macromedia Director movie presentations and the interactive frenzy that is the Internet. As Jonathan Paijon, executive vice president of 2-Lane Media, says, "Shockwave opens exciting new doors for everything from original online entertainment to interactive product demos...The potential for this product is absolutely tremendous." The latest releases add even more power by integrating Shockwave 6 with the exciting new Flash Player plug-in for viewing vector graphics and Web animation.

Shockwave delivers high-impact, interactive multimedia productions to the World Wide Web for Netscape and Internet Explorer users. Interactive graphics, audio, video, and Flash content can be combined to form amazing Shockwave-enhanced sites -- interactive games can be played over the 'net, site maps can take on entirely new dimensions, multimedia ads are able to grace sites with profound radiance, and Web front pages can finally shine in all their glorious splendor. Macromedia has done an excellent job of putting together an amazing array of content in its Shockwave Gallery. A free entertainment service called ShockRave is also available from Macromedia and offers a collection of games, cartoons, and music in an interactive entertainment environment.

You will of course need either Netscape or Internet Explorer and the Shockwave Plug-in module or ActiveX control in order to get the full effect of the above sites. If you use Internet Explorer as your main browser, we recommend downloading the ActiveX Control, as it automatically installs when accessing the ActiveX page. Both the plug-in and ActiveX control include Shockwave v6.0.1 and the Flash Player v3.0.8. The download also offers support for all Director, Freehand, Flash, and Authorware media. The most recent releases (v6.0 and later) even allow you to view movies, videos, and audio sound bytes in real-time using streaming technology.
