Using Windows 95 Explorer
Changing Icons
Paul Jones

How do I change the icons on the desktop?

Changing the default desktop icons requires playing with the Registry. Start by backing up your Registry (see "Mastering The Windows 95 Registry,"). Then, depending on which picture you want to change, look for these entries (HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT):

  • My Computer: Find HKCRCLSID {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069- A2D8-08002B30309D} DefaultIcon. Change the (Default) value.

  • Network Neighborhood: Find HKCRCLSID {208D2C60-3AEA-1069- A2D7-08002B30309D} DefaultIcon. Change the (Default) value.

  • Recycle Bin: You'll find three icon values stored in HKCRCLSID {645FF040-5081-101B- 9F08-00AA002F954E} DefaultIcon. The (Default) value is the one currently shown on the desktop, the empty and full values are swapped into (Default) as needed.

  • The Exchange Inbox: Find HKCRCLSID {00020D75-0000-0000- C000-000000000046} DefaultIcon. Change the (Default) value.

  • Vanishing Icons: To make any icon invisible, find a "transparent" icon (like Visual Basic's screen.ico) and use it in the (Default) value.
