Dragon NaturallySpeaking Pro 3.5
Voice Recognition Wasn't Always This Cool
Paul Jones

I remember the first time I tried voice recognition software. It was sometime in 1997 when I read on the Internet that a prominent software company was making its speech recognition software available for download. It was a beta edition and the download was near 50 MB. After an overnight downloading session on a 14.4 K modem I excitedly installed and ran the software. After setting up the sound and going through a short voice training session, I attempted to dictate a short note.

What I said, with a long pause between words:
Don't   forget   to   send   the   CDs   to   Shane   before   Friday.

What appeared in the word processor:
.,. forget to send .. , seeds to , . shame befall ., Friday.

Needless to say, I was unimpressed. That's why I was doubtful when the package came in the mail from Dragon Systems, Inc. But as you'll read here, my doubts were unfounded.
