Windows 95--Beyond the Basics
Working With Files
J. Kolenovsky

This is one of seven in a series of introductory Windows 95 videos produced by Learnkey. The instructor is Steve Broback who has had an impressive history with Pagemaker. He worked for Aldus testing some original software and later trained users. He is co-founder of Thunder Lizard Productions where he currently produces Pagemaker conferences on a national level. The video is one hour and thirty seven and one-half minutes long and has six sections which are:

  1. Working with files
  2. Launching applications and files
  3. Microsoft Network
  4. Faxing
  5. Troubleshooting
  6. Tips and tricks

Working with files

Discussed Disk Drives as shortcuts on the desktop. ( A,C,D, etc ). Covered customizing the Send To Menu and included sending files to My Documents, My Folder, Recycle Bin and a shortcut to the desktop. This shortcut can be accomplished by F3 (find) Desktop and put it in the Send To folder. To delete files directly, hit shift and delete to bypass the Recycle Bin. Discussed finding files as indicated earlier by locating "desktop". Or one may go to "Start" and use the Find command. Demonstrated compressing a Floppy Drive by using Drivespace. Also covered uncompressing the Drive. Covered My Briefcase and how to create, name and move files into it for going to work or elsewhere mobile. He showed how to move files from the original location to My Briefcase and how to update one file or all files after editing the data. (he brought an important point that when you use the floppy at your other place to copy the floppy to your hard drive so it will run faster when you edit). In regard to the Recycle Bin, covered how to restore a deleted file, default size of Bin is 10% and can be changed to whatever size in megabites you want either by individual drives or globally and showed oldest or newest delete date of action. (did not cover date/time stamp by expanding dialog box!)

Launching applications and files

Showed how to put an .exe file on the desktop as a shortcut. Drag and drop launching, i.e.,take a data file and drag and drop it on a Wordpad shortcut on the desktop and it opens. Showed how to create and remove folders from the Start Menu. Also pointed out how to put shortcuts to apps in the Start Up folder. Talks about DOS  and said it is hidden in the basement like the lady in "Psycho". (please!) Discusses MS Dos prompt and Command.Com. Alt/Tab is a neat flip between screens.

Microsoft Network

Covered installing a modem by going to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove New Hdw. Covered MS Exchange and Inbox, setting up a post office and compared this to a universal depot for mail. Other items covered were "run" signup, MSN icons, member assistance, favorite places, MS Knowledge Base and MSN Central. It was interesting that when one is in MSN Central and is digging deep down into the archives that the pull-down off the view toolbar will show you how many layers you are into. Covered e-mail and "find" and address books.
