Installation Installing Nova Backup is pretty much a snap. Start with the newly designed menu by selecting what type of install: Nova Disk, Nova Disk CD/DVD, or Nova Back (which covers most of the available tape drives, like QIC, SCSI, and EIDE). Now this is where we had a little problem with the installation at first, when we started we were under the impression that the CD/DVD would work with our operating system, Windows 2000. Our first surprise was that if not running Windows95/98/ME the installation is shaded out and will only install the Nova Back or Nova Disk--not the CD/DVD. The problem is that the program uses packet writing when backing up to CD/DVD and this feature is not yet available in Windows 2000 and NT. From what we heard at press time, this feature is coming soon but no one seems to really know when. Sort of like when the release of Win2K was always just about to happen.
After installation of a preferred backup type, all the interfaces are very similar, little changed from earlier versions of Nova Back. It resembles the familiar Explorer interface, with drive tree on the left and individual files on the right. Select full drives, directories, or individual files for backup, as needed. Set backup name, compression, dates, sort order, and many other options. Encryption and virus protection are also available from the main pull down.
