As stated, IrfanView is a compact image viewer--in fact it consists of a single EXE file. This means it can be installed in any folder. This also means that it loads almost instantly. Though small, it has many powerful features indicative of a well-designed program. It makes extensive use of hot keys accessing important functions instantly. Many Properties can be set to individual preference, including file extensions to associate with IrfanView and addition to the "Send To" shell menu. Batch Conversion/Rename of files is also supported. This is very useful for such things as renaming all those files of the family picnic with a more meaningful file name from the nondescript names generated by a digital camera. Also included is a very useful screen capture mode for capturing screens directly off the computer screen. It also supports any TWAIN compatible device, and can access it directly from the program.
If you are looking for a powerful but compact graphic/image viewing and editing program, IrfanView is the one. This little utility really packs a lot of punch and the price is excellent. It's absolutely free for home users, and commercial users are only asked to pay $10 for a single-user license. You won't find many jewels like this anywhere on the Internet.
