NeoTrace 2.12a
NeoTrace's Complete Package
Douglas Smith

Initial setup is simple; input information about your location, such as country, city, state, and zip code, and press lookup, while connected to either a LAN or dial-up connection. NeoTrace comes back with information about your location and allows you to add that information to their database. Then it presents the tracing screen, which accepts either a typed-in trace route or one of the locations already defined in the program. Trace routes set are saved into a real neat drop down box for future traces or pings.

This program is highly configurable, from look-and-feel to the sounds signals during a trace or ping. With NeoTrace will save you much time; not only is it much faster than other trace route solutions, it is simpler to use and returns more information.

If you cannot reach a particular site, run a NeoTrace before calling your ISP to complain. Most often it will turn out that your ISP's network is just fine, but your target site's network is down or very slow. Analyze network connections and find any failure point, determine if it's the ISP, the target site or part of the Internet backbone at fault. Simply drag a link from your browser and drop it on NeoTrace; all the nodes between your computer and the destination site are displayed in a straightforward, graphical format. A cursor over any node icon displays the IP address and round-trip data along with the name and address of the domain's owner.

The features are the best part of NeoTrace, and the many variations of the program really help you get down to business at troubleshooting time. Some of them are:

  • Super fast Trace Route
  • Drag and Drop operation
  • Informative display
  • Trace History
  • Local DNS and Whois caching
  • International WhoIs support
  • Create reports in text, HTML or printed form (sample)
  • Configurable node labels
  • Instant browser access to nodes
  • Available continuous ping update
  • Nearly 200 country flags displayable
  • Meaningful sound effects for events

These features are only the start of what this program can do. Ease of use is one of the greatest assets of any program; users' first impressions last and shape how often and how well it will be used. When you take a look at NeoTrace your first and subsequent impressions will be just like ours: GREAT!
