Symantec Adds AntiSpam to Norton Internet Security, Password Manager to Norton SystemWorks
Norton AntiVirus 2004 Stars in Both Bundles
Eric Grevstad

Mon 9/8/03 -- Fresh from the introduction of Norton AntiVirus 2004 and its expanded detection and removal of spyware, adware, and keystroke-logging programs as well as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, Symantec Corp. has announced new versions of two popular suites that include Norton AntiVirus. Norton SystemWorks 2004 adds a new secure password-management utility, while Norton Internet Security adds a spam fighter to its antivirus, firewall, and privacy protection.

Norton SystemWorks 2004 ($70) combines Norton AntiVirus 2004 with Norton Utilities and CleanSweep for system optimization and problem-solving; Norton GoBack Personal Edition for quick disaster and data recovery; and Norton Web Tools for removing Internet clutter and sustaining dial-up connections to the Internet.

It also includes the new Norton Password Manager, which employs strong encryption to remember and automatically fill in Internet and Windows application passwords and online purchasing forms, safely storing all your passwords, address, credit card, and other information under a single master password. A Professional edition ($100) adds Norton Ghost for backup and file recovery and Process Viewer and Performance Test utilities for detailed system information.

Norton Internet Security 2004 ($70) combines Norton AntiVirus 2004 with a new version of Norton Personal Firewall, offering convenient browser-based control of firewall settings and immediate protection whenever a notebook connects to a new or previously saved network, and Norton Parental Control to block access to Web sites and newsgroups that may not be suitable for children. The Professional edition ($100) adds advanced data-recovery and erasure or cleaning technology.

A new component of Norton Internet Security is Norton AntiSpam 2004, which automatically detects and filters out unwanted commercial e-mail. Compatible with any standard POP3 e-mail client and integrated with the latest versions of Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Eudora, AntiSpam offers multiple filtering layers to minimize the false positives that plague other spam-stoppers. An intelligent filtering engine learns to tell spam from legitimate mail by analyzing the user's outgoing messages.

Norton AntiSpam 2004 and Norton Personal Firewall 2004 will also be available separately for $40 and $50, respectively. All of the 2004 Symantec programs include Microsoft Windows- or Office-style product activation or antipiracy code and are expected to ship in mid-September.
