Benign Strips Evil Code from Incoming E-Mail
Works Alongside Anti-Virus
Eric Grevstad

Mon 9/8/03 -- Firetrust Ltd. says that 95 percent of all viruses, worms, scripts, and Web bugs are sent via e-mail -- and that your antivirus program can't stop a new worm or script until the antivirus vendor adds and you download an update for it. Firetrust's Benign eliminates that vulnerability by assuring that only safe e-mail reaches your inbox -- the program rewrites incoming mail on the fly, stripping out worms, ActiveX scripts, and other malicious code before sending along the actual message content so the resulting e-mail is safe to view or download.

Priced at $35, Benign is a set-and-forget solution that prevents worms from executing or spreading and swats Web bugs that secretly tell spammers you have a valid address for future mailings. Three customizable security levels or settings let you decide whether to block or rename attachments, strip out HTML or images, and so on.
